Should I be worried about the cost of dementia care or focus on the care itself?

It’s natural for families to feel torn between two competing worries: how to provide the best possible care for a loved one with dementia, and how to afford that care. The truth is, these two concerns are inseparable. Good dementia care does not mean ignoring costs, and financial planning does not mean neglecting care. The key is to approach both together.

Care for dementia is often a marathon, not a sprint. Families who only focus on today’s needs can find themselves overwhelmed later when care becomes more intensive and expensive. On the other hand, families who focus only on dollars and cents may delay the support that makes life safer, healthier, and more joyful right now. My advice is to balance the two by starting with a clear plan.

First, learn what benefits you may already qualify for. Medicare’s GUIDE program, which Lizzy Care delivers, provides navigation services and a respite stipend at no cost to families. Medicaid can extend support further for those who qualify. Private pay, long-term care insurance, and community resources can fill in additional gaps.

Second, recognize that investing in care early, whether it’s a companion to reduce isolation, an aide to ensure safety, or a navigator to coordinate everything can prevent crises that are far more stressful and costly in the long run.

So, don’t choose between worrying about costs or focusing on care. Do both, with a thoughtful plan and the right partners by your side.
