The kids are flying in. Someone booked a beach house.

And underneath all of it, a quiet dread: “How is this going to go?”

But for caregivers, it can quietly become one of the harder stretches of the year. Not because things, “might go wrong,” but because those routines we’ve carefully built have an added layer of pressure: disruption.

“Is Mom still okay to travel?”

One of the most common questions we get as summer approaches. The honest answer is: it depends, and it’s worth thinking through carefully before you commit.

Travel isn’t off the table for someone living with dementia, but it does require more planning than it used to. A change in environment can temporarily worsen confusion in ways that catch unprepared families off guard. Someone who appeared stable at home can become disoriented and distressed when brought somewhere new, and that’s hard for everyone involved.

So before saying “yes” to a trip, ask a few honest questions:

Is this destination familiar to your loved one, or entirely new?

Is there somewhere quiet they can decompress when the stimulation gets to be too much?

What’s the plan if they become confused or upset mid-trip?

Is the travel itself realistic, given where they are right now?

It can be disheartening when the trip seems unrealistic, but if travel feels like too much this year, it is okay to say so. That is not giving up. That is knowing your loved one.

The routine you’ve built is doing more than anyone might realize

One of the things that makes summer gatherings hard is that the caregiving infrastructure you’ve built is likely invisible to everyone else.

The visiting family isn’t able to see the nuances. They see a dinner that’s running late, or a quiet hour that seems unnecessary, or a loved one who “seems fine.” What they don’t see is the months it took to figure out what works, and how quickly things can unravel when the routine gets knocked around.

You are allowed to protect that routine, and it’s important that you do. You don’t have to apologize for it or over-explain it. A simple, direct heads-up to visiting family before they arrive goes a long way.

The pressure to make everything look fine

Unintentional weight loss is common in dementia and should be taken seriously. It increases the risk of falls, weakens the immune system, and can accelerate cognitive decline. The good news is that there are practical strategies that make a real difference.

You shouldn’t hide dementia from the people who love you. If your loved one needs to step away and rest, let them. If they say something that doesn’t quite make sense, you don’t have to apologize for it – respond to it as you would any other time.

The more honest you are, the more your family can actually show up for you. Not just this summer, but also going forward.

You are allowed to need support, too

Summer gatherings can sometimes make the isolation of caregiving feel sharper. You’re surrounded by family, and you may still feel completely alone in what you’re carrying. That feeling is much more common than anyone talks about.

Even when things feel daunting, remember that you’re not alone.

If family vacations or gatherings on the horizon feel intimidating, reach out to your Lizzy Care navigator.
